    *sigh*... Cardiff.........
I really want to go to Cardiff.
Actually, I really want to go to the UK in general. But I think I want to live in Wales. It's so beautiful there!
Also, Welsh is such a beautiful language. And the Welsh accent is beautiful.
"Creu Gwir fel gwydr o ffwrnais awen" ("Creating truth like glass from the furnace of inspiration") - that's what's written on the front of the Wales Millennium Centre.

I'd just love to go there, and live there for a few years. I want to see the Millennium Centre. I want to stand in the Millennium square.
It's so much easier to travel when you're there. From Wales, I can travel all over the UK. And I can easily go to Europe.

I REALLY WANT TO GO TO WALES!

FLORIDA IS [explicit word deleted] [explicit word deleted] [explicit word deleted]ing BORING!!!!!!!!
    Hi everyone.

So I've been in Florida (Panama City Beach) since Friday, and have discovered the following:

The beach is only fun for one, maybe two days.
    Small children are annoying.
After you've built your gigantic sand castle, even though it lasted overnight, people will have no courtesy and will enjoy smashing it and standing on it.
    Small children are annoying.
Putt putt is horrible when you have five bloody irritating children in the group behind you the WHOLE DAMN TIME!
    Small children are annoying.
A Qt/C++ book is no good when you don't have a computer on which to write the programs (please note: I'm using my dad's laptop and he has less than a Meg of free space, so I can't exactly install Qt on it).
    Small children are annoying.
A 320 GB hard drive is WONDERFUL... unless the computer you're going to plug it into is almost 750 km away!!!
    Small children are annoying.
    I NEED MY OWN LAPTOP!
    Small children are annoying.
    I want a Wii.
    Small children are annoying.
    I want a Wizpy.
The beach is no fun at all during a thunderstorm. All that happens is that your timeshare and car get sand allover them from the heavy winds.
    Small children are annoying.
It's not nice to swim in the pool when there are small children there, because...
    Small children are annoying.
    My parents are annoying
You shouldn't let your parents meet people, because they'll end up inviting them around every day.

    New Networking Protocol
    Hi everyone,
I was just talking on the phone to Andy about getting a C compiler onto his old FreeDOS box. He said the compiler was 8 MB, and since he only had a floppy drive for removable hardware, he was looking for an alternative way to load programs.

Anyway, so I was pondering about his hardware - seeing if there's a possible way for him to do such a thing. And then it hit me!

His FreeDOS box and his Workstation both have Audio in and out jacks!
I hit the jackpot! Now all we need to do is write Linux and FreeDOS drivers that allow you to use a sound card like a Winmodem (a modem that doesn't do anything itself, but just uses software instead). I call my new protocol PPPoA (Point-to-Point Protocol over Audio jacks).

The basic idea is that a winmodem simply takes the audio and outputs it to your phone line. This protocol is identical to what a winmodem does, except it uses your sound card (or at least one of them) to transmit the data. What's really great about this is that, if you have enough sound outputs and inputs, you could theoretically get more one-way bandwidth than a DSL modem (A stationwagon full of tapes, hurtling down the highway...) on short distances.

    Slashdot-style Limerick
Okay, so Andy and I were working on his Governor's school essay, and during the time we got bored. So we collaboratively wrote the following /.-style Limerick. Enjoy.

    1. There once was a man from Nantucket...
    2. Who told AOL to "Suck it!"
    3. They gave him CD's
    4. ???
    5. And then he doth did "Profit!!!"

We also did some other poems. so here they are.

    Roses are red
    Violets are blue
    Sugar is sweet
    And fuck Time Warner.

There once was a man from Nantucket...
Who told AOL to "Suck it!"[his naughty parts, that is]
    He tried to drop 'em,
    But they just stopped him,
And they sent some CDs in a bucket.

    Ubuntu CNR
Okay, so quick post before I go to bed.

I've just been re-hearing about this Linspire CNR in Ubuntu thing. Well, the Linux Action Show had the Linspire CEO on, and he said that Linspire never wanted to be in the OS market in the first place.

I say good. I'd love it if Linspire's CNR was available in Kubuntu. If that were to happen, I'd be giving some money to Linspire.

Honestly, this is what I'd like.

My sister Michelle asks me to help her buy a computer. So we go to Staples and she buys a computer.

When Michelle gets home, she plugs her computer in and turns it on. (It's running Ubuntu) It starts a GUI setup program. It gives her a choice of three pictures of what she wants her desktop to look like (KDE, GNOME, XFCE). She chooses the one she wants and clicks next. She doesn't click the "Advanced" option in the bottom left corner of the window, because she doesn't want Advanced options like I would.

After clicking next, her computer asks her if she has another computer (or more than one). She has an old Dell laptop, so she clicks yes. It asks her how it's connected. She knows that it connects wirelessly, so she selects wireless network. It asks her to get her other computer and put the "Transfer Wizard" CD into the other computer. She does so and it tells her what to type into the setup wizard of her Linux machine. Next, it asks her to transfer her files. It detects iTunes, Winamp and Windows Media Player. It asks her which she uses (along with "Other"). She selects iTunes, and it automatically transfers her music to her Linux box. It then does the same with her video. Her documents get transferred by transferring (most of) the stuff in ther "My Documents" folder and then asking if there's anything else. Since she selects yes, it gives her the option to select other files and folders.

Once she's transferred all of her info, it checks what programs she has and uses. Since she chose KDE, it adds KDE, Amarok, Kontact, Kaffeine, etc. (the basics) to the install list (all of the available packages are on the hard disc in /var/cache/apt/archives). It also installs OpenOffice (although if she had chosen Advanced it would have given her a choice of Office suite). It (the Linux machine) then asks which of her Windows programs she uses (her Windows machine and her Linux machine are talking and getting all of this. It automatically selects frequently used programs). She selects GIMP and Firefox, and her Linux machine adds those to the install Queue. She also selects iTunes, Microsoft Office 2000 and uTorrent. It thus adds the corresponding Linux/KDE apps to the install queue (Amarok, OpenOffice.org and KTorrent, and yes I do realize that OpenOffice and Amarok have already been added. It ignores the second addition, but still installs it!)

While her computer is busy installing those programs, along with WINE since it detected that her old computer is a Windows one, it explains to her that it is installing alternatives, but notes that, since all three seem to work fine under WINE, she may choose to install them if she chooses (it also notes the legal issues with MS Office's licence). She chooses to install iTunes and uTorrent. It downloads the programs and, once WINE in installed, leads her through the install processes (NOTE: I would really like root-mode WINE to allow system-wide installs of programs). Since neither of these are MSI-based installers, it cannot do silent installs for them.

After all of these installations have occurred, right before it sends her to the login screen, it asks her if she would like to see what other programs are available. She wants some games, so she says yes. She browses through the archive and notices some free games that she would like to get. She also notices that she can buy some programs straight through that.

Once her games have installed, she gets sent to the login screen and starts to use her new computer.

    A few notes:

The program installation is how I've always hoped CNR is (I don't actually know, I've never used it). An APT frontend on the free software side, but with additional software that can be paid for. What is paid for is kept in 2 places (on the computer, printable if necessary, and on CNR's servers).

That transfer wizard is a Windows/Mac/Linux transfer wizard and will transfer the settings of programs, too (Firefox -> Firefox, for example, so that when she opens Firefox in linux all of her bookmarks remain)

All of the common available software is cached on the hard disc, but an apt-cache clean is run afterwards to free up space.

I would like it if WINE allowed system-wide cross-user programs with one user as the administrator (their programs can be multiuser, but don't have to).

This would require better integration with the WINE AppDB

    Good night.

How to record Skype conversations in Linux
I found this quite interesting and helpful - It's a HOWTO for recording any Skype conversation under Linux. It's pretty handy to have, especially if you're trying to do long distance podcasts, or for any other reason need to record a conversation over Skype.

How to record Skype conversations on Linux
Okay, so I got this from http://blog.andrlik.org/2006/02/17/howto-record-skype-conversations-in-linux/

However, that blog entry is rather old, so I rewrote it here to make it easier to follow.

    What you'll need:
A Linux distro (I'm using Kubuntu, so I'll focus it there, but the original author of this HOWTO used SuSE)
    sox and soxmix
    lame or oggenc
    vsound
    Skype
skype-rec (the program used, I'll lead you thru installing them both)

Okay, so I'm going to assume that you have Linux installed, and I'll help you install everything else. Again, this tutorial is specifically designed for *buntu operating systems (this should work perfectly, though, on other APT-based Linux distros without change)

Open a terminal program (don't be scared, you can do it thru Adept or Synaptic, too if you want, but you're on your own to install the programs, and you'll have to use the terminal in the end anyway). Type 'sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list' (without the quotes) and press enter.

Add the following line to the end of the sources.list file

    deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free

Now press Ctrl-O and then Ctrl-X. You should be back at the shell now.

Now, type 'sudo aptitude update' (again, without the quotes), press Enter, and wait.
Once you get back to the $ prompt, type 'sudo aptitude install skype sox sox-dev lame liblame-dev vorbis-tools vsound' (once more, without the quotes) and press Enter.

So, once that's finished, you'll have all of the prerequisites for the Skype recording program.

Next, download the skype recording program. The following URLs are for the same file, just on separate servers.

    http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz
    http://ovh.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz
    http://puzzle.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz
    http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz
    http://superb-west.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz
    http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz
    http://ufpr.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz

More Sourceforge mirrors can be found at
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz?download

Save it to it's own directory (I'll use ~/skype-rec as an example)

An example of a way to do this is (without the quotes) 'wget http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/skype-rec/skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz'

Next, go to ~/skype-rec (cd ~/skype-rec) and type 'tar xvf skype-rec-1.0.tar.gz'. This will untar (extract) the files to the subdirectory skype-rec-1.0/.
Go to that directory (cd skype-rec-1.0). in that directory, type 'make; sudo make install' and wait.

Once that's finished, everything should be ready.

Type 'cd skype-rec.rc ~/.skype-rec'. This will copy the configuration file to your home directory (where it needs to be).
Now go to your home directory (cd ~) and open the .skype-rec file in your favourite text editor ('nano .skype-rec' for nano).

Go down to line 36 ('$STEREO_MIX = 1') and change the 1 to a 0. I haven't been able to get the stereo mixing to work.

Now I want to use the two original files (my speaking and everyone else's speaking) rather than having them all together. This is beneficial because I can edit them separately. So I'll change line 53 from '$CLEANUP_ORIG = 1;' to '$CLEANUP_ORIG = 0;' so that I can have the originals there, too.

If you want to change any other options, do so now. Then, save it and exit your text editor.

Now, from your command line, type skype-rec. This will start Skype, and you can have your conversations, but only in OSS mode. It will not work in ALSA mode, so remember to go to Tools ->Options, and under Sound devices choose OSS.

Now you're all set! Check that it's working by dialing the skype test call, and have fun recording your conversations!

(Remeber that in some countires it's required by law that both sides of the conversation know that it's being recorded [in the U.S. only one side needs to know]).

    Windows Media coming to Linux
You know, as weird as it is to me to say this, I'm actually quite glad that Real is making open source WM* codecs for Linux, as WAY too many websites still use the WMA/WMV codecs, even though XviD and Theora are superior.

My only complaint (and this is a complaint to Microsoft, not Real) is that it still won't be able to read DRM'd Windows media files.

Still, this is good news for Linux users.

    IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
    Hi guys,

I'm here in Canada, and my second cousin once removed, Graham, told me something that I feel is EXTREMELY important, especially if you are in touch with nature as we are. I feel that he can explain this better than I do, so I'm going to let him explain it. PLEASE, even if you can't do this, tell other people about it. He says it's okay to copy what he's written, so even if you can't phrase these things well, you still have no excuse not to tell people. And if you don't even want to copy that, please just link to this post.

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Here's Graham:

Greetings, passionate dolphin loving people. I am a 22 year old, simple high school graduate who doesn't know how to fight court battles or change government policy, but I intend to rescue bottlenose dolphins from the largest and most brutal slaughter in the world. Prepare to witness the largest cover-up of animal cruelty in history. In the remote fishing villages of Taiji (Wakayama prefecture) and Futo (Shizuoka prefecture), fishermen drive dolphins and other small whales into a lagoon and slaughter them with knives and hooks. The animals having great intelligence and self awareness feel this pain and they scream as their throats are cut and their bodies stabbed. They are killed for their meat which is to be eaten, but it is not a very profitable business. It continues to this day, because not all the animals are killed. Some of the animals, mostly young, are separated into another lagoon where, believe it or not, DOLPHIN TRAINERS, members of the International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA), and the World Association for Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), are selecting dolphins to take to their marine attractions where they will spend the rest of their lives swimming with tourists and jumping through hoops, etc. Some of the trainers are Westerners but they are mostly Asian. The fishermen are angry and aggressive when this slaughter is being filmed or photographed. The fishermen say they are killing the dolphins as a means of pest control. Although they will say that the dolphins are responsible for depleting the fish stocks, the Japanese Government and the Japanese Fisheries Service provides absolutely no documentation to substantiate that accusation. It's overfishing and pollution that's doing it, but the fishermen won't recognize it. The trainers show no compassion for the dolphins that are drowning in the nets or being butchered. Some of them are eating lunch not far from a dolphin that has blood gushing out of it's throat from a machete cut.
Yes, this is very disturbing indeed, but it can be stopped. Animal welfare organizations have organized a world wide event at stopping the slaughter. On the 8th of October at 12:00 PM noontime, people will be protesting in front of Japanese embassies all over the world; Paris, London, Belgium, Toronto, Detroit, San Francisco, the event occurred last year (2005) and there were a few thousand people total. The protest probably didn't work as the media attention was focused on the earthquake that devastated Pakistan's Kashmir province which occurred right on the day of the protest. But hopefully, this year, we can get more people to show up. We need everyone, schools, clubs, rock and roll bands, McDonalds, we don't care who it is. We need numbers. I could go on and on about it, but you can visit these websites for more information on the slaughter and view some videos and a radio talk show.

    http://www.savetaijidolphins.org
    http://www.bluevoice.org
http://www.animalvoices.ca/shows/richard_obarry (there are 2 MP3's of the radio interview that can be downloaded. Part 1 is a major point of interest)

These sites will give you enough information to change the way you think about the animals forever. This is information that deserves to be shown to the whole world. Because these dolphins shows are not a game anymore. Free speech is being violated and dolphin loving people who became trainers are getting blinded by big business and are constantly spouting inconceivable lies to everyone. They would even lie to God's face. It's that bad. By the way, it is not the Japanese people who are killing the animals. It's some few fishermen in some few remote villages. So, please do not judge all Japanese people as they are unaware of it.

I am releasing a novel soon. It is called Dolphi the Dolphin Man and it is about a man who gets turned into a half-human, half-bottlenose dolphin and has a big adventure. If you are a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan, then this novel is definitely for you.

Well, good luck in taking the world back, because the world will never be a happy place for our children and our children's children unless we do something to fight the evil and injustice that plagues us all. Buy Neil Young's Living With War album.

    Sincerely, Graham R. Lowe

Hey Everyone (All... 2 of you that actually READ this)!

I'll be in Canada until probably July 2nd. Please make comments with any important things I miss. I'll try to go online (I'll be in Toronto for a few days), but most of the time I'll be without any internet connection ($deity help me!).

If I can I'll blog about it.

The installer detects the wrong network card. So it makes it use the outdated tulip driver instead of the new rewritten tulip driver. This is because my card, without the name difference, looks identical.

    Dapper Upgrade Update
Okey dokey. Here's my log so far.
[Times are in UTC] 2006-04-24 02:38

Okay, so first things first, I changed all breezy references in
/etc/apt/sources.list to dapper and did an apt-get update.

Some [unofficial] repositories don't have dapper, but these repositories
were merely set up to allow breezy users to upgrade, so that's okay.
commenting them out and going again...

Okay. Success. Just about every package on my system seems to need an
    upgrade. On to phase 2.

    sudo apt-get -s dist-upgrade

That simulates a distro upgrade. So far no problems *crosses fingers*
    here we go.

    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Okay. so over a Gig (1182 MB) of new packages.
    This could take a while. (2006-04-24 02:47)

    2006-04-24 02:54
    Okay. 3% done. w00t.
So, to pass the time, I'll read a few fortunes.
(Damn! fortune has some REALLY good ASCII-Art!)

    2006-04-24 03:37
Going to bed. 3 hours of downloading left and then the install process.
Might work a bit in the morning before school.
    G'night.

    2006-04-24 11:46
Apparently it didn't get everything. Luckily it was almost all the way
through. anyway, I've restarted the process, now I'm going to school.

    2006-04-24 21:43
Soo... Not working very well. I'm currently in the LiveCD. I think I'll just use Espresso. It should be fully functional.
